Student to Faculty Ratio in Architecture Design Studio

Student to Faculty Ratio in Architecture Design Studio

In general, the lower the student to faculty ratio, the better.
A low ratio should mean that classes are small and faculty members can spend more time working individually with students.
Private institutions such as Duke University (7:1 ratio), Caltech (3:1 ratio), Stanford University (12:1 ratio), Washington University (8:1), and all of the Ivy League schools such as Harvard (7:1 ratio) and Yale (6:1 ratio) have impressively low student to faculty ratios. They are research-centered institutions that often have more graduate students than undergraduates.
More common, especially among selective colleges and universities, is a ratio between 10 to 1 and 20 to 1.
More important is: What is the average class size?

– Factors
There are several factors that we have to consider when thinking about Faculty to Student Ratio:

1- University: (quality, reputation, image, branding + recruitment, marketing, …)

— Public vs Private institutions
— Teaching vs Research university
— Small vs Large university
— UG Lower level vs UG Upper level vs Graduate courses

2- College: َ(quality, reputation, image, branding)
3- Department: َ(quality, reputation, image, branding)
— Faculty Student Ratio:
— Permanent vs Full-Time Faculty Members (the number of adjunct, part-time, and temporary faculty members matters)

4- Courses:
— Studio courses: PBL individualized instructions 15-20 minutes per student per studio twice a week (15×20/60=5 hours!)
— Practical courses: CAD Labs & Workshops (Logistics: lab size, number of terminals, plotters, software, technical support), Model Making and Fabrication Workshop (material, technicians, safety)
— Lecture courses: Can accommodate more if spaces allow.

– International
Faculty/student ratios typically (1:12) throughout the design studios are mindful of the significant importance of providing as much contact time as possible between the instructor and the students. This favorable ratio in support of the program’s teaching / learning, results in a large number of one-on-one critiques, group discussions and public juries essential to a successful and meaningful studio setting.

Compared to other subjects in the architecture course, Design Studio is the most dominant subject with the
highest credit hours per week. Other subjects such as Construction Technology, Architectural History and Theory, Environmental Physics, Design Communication and others have to serve Design Studio learning in each semester.
